"Sure, I suppose I'm a people-person," agreed Charlie. "I like people. Nothing really wrong with them. And I was in a band... am in a band... so I've been around a lot of people," he added with a nod.
"Why, do you not do well around people or something?" he asked, unsure of exactly why she had brought it up.

Ana could have laughed. Do well with people? Only the complete opposite, "Charlie I'm gonna tell you somethin' I never ususally reveal about myself. I am not a people person. For some reason...people just don't like me. I don't know why, maybe it's because of the way I act or things I say when I'm around 'em. Truth is they just don't. I've been trying to get 'em to my whole life. In the end. I just stopped trying." She sighed and looked Charlie in the eye, "That's why when something like this happens," she gestured towards Shannon's grave, "There's no return from it. I have to live with it forever and pay the price. Which means the whole people hating me will continue. In a way, it won't actually be different. If I'm lucky."

Charlie listened to Ana. It seemed that she was at least used to being a sort of outcast. The two of them weren't exactly friends, and he could almost see why people didn't like her (other than the fact that she'd shot Shannon). He wasn't going to say so, of course. That'd make things worse for sure.
"Well..." he said, not exactly sure of what to say. "People have said it before; this island is a sort of way for us to all start over. Be a new person. You got off on the wrong foot -- possibly both wrong feet, depending on how you look at it -- but you can't let that one thing define who you are, you know?" Was he being... philosophical? Impossible. "Don't let it get you down too much. Easier said than done, I know," he added with a nod. He knew that Ana wasn't going to be able to just forget that Shannon's death had ever happened. "But remember what I said about finding a happy place. That's a good method. I'd go with that."

"My happy place," Ana began desperately trying to think. She thought about it for a few minutes and she decided her happy place, the thing that made her happy, was being with Jack. Whenever she was with him she felt like a human being not a monster, "I guess you're right. Everyone else seems to have made a fresh start," Ana knew she was finding it difficult. She couldn't change in one conversation but she could see where she had gone wrong.

Charlie gave Ana a small smile. "Things can't get much worse than they are already," he said. "Just go to your happy place and ignore all the other gits out there. Don't brood too much. A little bit of brooding is fine, I know from experience. But not too much." Charlie wasn't sure exactly what he was saying. He was probably rambling again, which was a good habit of his. Oh well.

Ana could see Charlie was rambling and she gave a small smile, "Yeah, 'cause when people brood it only shows them as lonely people," she pointed out. Maybe people didn't like her because she freezed them out. She was in her own little world most of the time which probably put people off, "You know, it's funny. My phsyciatrist used to talk with me about Happy Places. But back then I didn't wanna listen."
It was only then she realised she had revealed another of her secrets. The fact that after her baby had been cruelly taken away she had to talk to physciatrists.

"Psychiatrist?" asked Charlie, looking at Ana with a puzzled expression on his face. "What were you--?" He stopped mid-sentence, thinking better about it. He shook his head. "Never mind. Not my business," he said.
He remembered, just a few months ago, when Liam had tried to go get him to talk to some shrink about his drug problem. Charlie hadn't wanted to listen to any of that and had walked out on his brother. Maybe if he had stayed and listened, he would be here right now and life would be better.
But if he had taken Liam's advice, he might have gone back to drugs in the future. Here, at least, Charlie had to stay clean. There were things he cared about here, like Claire and Aaron. He had to stay clean for them, so that Claire would trust him again. So that his life would have some sort of meaning to it.

Ana paused and glared at him. He must think she was some sort of phsyco, "I'm not crazy," she made sure he understood that, "It was just after the incident I needed therapy."
She knew he had no idea what this incident actually was but she actually felt a little embarrassed about talking about her therapy. And sad about losing her baby.....and boyfriend.

"No, of course not," said Charlie quickly. "I never said you were crazy." There were times when he doubted her sanity, yes, but he wasn't going to come out and say it. "People go to shrinks for all kinds of reasons."
He paused, debating on whether or not he should tell Ana about the time he almost went to one. Well, they were doing a lot of confiding, which was strange, so he didn't see why not.
"My brother tried to get me to go to one a few months ago. But me, being the stubborn and angry prat I am, completely ignored him. Ended up getting a plane ticket to the States, and now I'm here sitting here talking to you," he said.
"I got over my problem, though," he continued. "I mean, if I had went to that shrink, I would've had to pay for it and everything. Here, though... rehab was free," he said, forcing a grin.

Ana smiled very slightly. Everyone would go on about how this island opened opputunities and healed. She was just about ready to strangle Locke if he mentioned the island's powers one more time. But strangley he was kind of right. And Charlie was right. But Ana wrestled with the fact that she may still need therapy. She had shot another person-surely that was more of a reason to get help. But here-she couldn't. It should have been difficult to get hold of a gun here, But oddly enough it wasn't. And Ana had used the gun. She couldn't go back now.
"I guess we all have our problems then, don't we. I'm not sure time will erase this. I don't even think Sayid will forgive me. He has a good reason to hate me."

Charlie shook his head. "No, I don't think you and Sayid will be getting together and having tea anytime soon," he told her. "But he's a good guy and I'm sure he knows it was an accident. It'll just take him awhile to just... you know... get over it." Which was going to be hard for him, especially since he and Shannon had been so close.
There was silence for a moment as the two of them just sat there. "You know," he said randomly, "this sort of reminds me of confessional." He wasn't exactly sure why it reminded him of the confessionals he used to go to, but something about this conversation was similar.

"Confessional?" Ana asked, "I didn't take you for a religious man, Chalie," she said raising her eyebrows. Ana wasn't religious either but she had no idea Charlie was all in to this church and confessional business.

"Oh, well I used to be," said Charlie. "But then... you know... stuff happened and I sort of drifted away from it all." He supposed that he didn't come off as a religious person. He hadn't really done anything like that in a while. And it was all because of the band. Because of the drugs.
But now there was Mr. Eko and his church that he was helping with. "I am helping Eko build that church of his," he added as if it meant something.

"Oh yes," Ana said remembering, "That's right-The church. How's that going for you?" Ana had forgotten all about the church. She thought they could be doing something more useful but didn't say it out loud.

"Oh, it's swell," replied Charlie with a nod. "He won't tell me anythin' about why it is he's wanting to build a church, but I figured I'd be a sport and help the guy out. Can't hurt, right?" he asked with a hint of a smile. Charlie also hoped that doing this would make Claire see him a bit better. To see that he was helping out with something like this would surely help get him back on her good side, right?
That wasn't the only reason he was helping, though. Charlie also wanted to be able to give a confession or two once it was finished and hoped that Eko wouldn't mind listening.
After all, Charlie had a long list of things he needed to confess...
